Photographic detail at a scale most artists will not attempt. Micro realism puts a recognisable face, animal or object into a few centimetres — and it is the style where the gap between a good artist and a great one is most visible.
Filters open the full portfolio with that selection applied.
Same goal, opposite constraint. Realism has room and uses it; micro realism has to imply detail that will not physically fit. The artist decides what to leave out so your eye fills it in — that editing is the whole skill.
Done well, a 6cm piece reads as photographic from a metre away. Done as a shrunk-down realism design, it reads as a grey blur within a few years.
There is a floor, and it is set by skin rather than by skill. Ink spreads slightly over years, so any detail finer than roughly a millimetre will eventually merge with what is next to it. A design with detail below that floor is a tattoo with an expiry date.
We will tell you where that floor sits for your specific design, and it is usually a centimetre or two larger than people first ask for.
Micro realism wants low-movement, low-sun placement: inner forearm, outer bicep, calf, shoulder blade. Hands, fingers, feet and ribs are the placements we most often advise against, because the same spread that softens any tattoo destroys this one.
Placement matters more here than in any other style we offer. It is worth moving the piece a few centimetres to a better spot.
A micro realism piece at 5–8cm runs 2M–6M IDR (≈ $124–$372). Price tracks the detail rather than the area — a dense 5cm portrait can cost more than a simple 10cm piece, because the work is in the density.
Priced per design. Send the reference and we will come back with a range and an honest minimum size.
This is the style most affected by time, sun and placement. Well placed and correctly sized, a micro realism piece stays sharp for many years; undersized on a hand, it will not. Sunscreen is not optional here.
Every tattoo includes a free touch-up and this is the work that most often uses it. Come back rather than live with something that has softened.
Micro realism is done by a small number of our artists rather than all of them — it is a specific hand. Send your reference with the enquiry and we will match you across Canggu, Uluwatu and Seminyak.
Consultations are free whether or not you book.
A micro realism piece (5–8cm) — 2M – 6M IDR (≈ $124 – $372). Priced per design, never per hour. Card payments carry a 3% surcharge, stated before any link is sent.
For a recognisable human face, around 6–8cm. Below that the features that make it that person start to merge.
It does not fade faster — but because the detail is finer, the same amount of softening is far more visible. Placement and sunscreen are what decide it.
Yes, though most of ours is black and grey, which holds detail better at this scale in Bali sun.
Not sharper, but a dense small piece takes longer over one small area, which people find more tiring than they expect.
