Tattoo Tiers Explained: What Small, Mid-Size and Large-Scale Work Really Involve

Most people walk into a studio with an image in mind and no sense of what it costs in hours, sittings, or recovery. Tattoos fall into rough tiers, and knowing which one your idea belongs to changes everything — your budget, your pain threshold, and whether it's even finishable before your flight home.

Tier One: Small Flash, Under Two Hours

Fine line script, small symbols, minimalist botanicals — anything roughly palm-sized or smaller. These are typically single-sitting pieces, often walk-in friendly, and the most forgiving to heal. The trade-off is longevity: very small work packed with fine detail blurs faster as ink spreads over the years. A good artist will push you to size up slightly and leave breathing room between lines, and that advice is worth taking.

Tier Two: Mid-Size Custom, Half a Day

A forearm panel, a calf piece, an upper thigh design. This is where custom work genuinely begins — a consultation, a drawn design, and three to six hours in the chair, either in one long sitting or split across two. Most travellers land here without realising it, then discover the session runs longer than the afternoon they set aside. Book it early in your trip, not the day before you fly.

Tier Three: Large-Scale, Measured in Sessions

Sleeves, back pieces, full leg panels. Realistically 15 to 40+ hours spread across sessions, with healing time between each. No reputable artist will compress this into a single week, and anyone who offers to is telling you something about their standards. Large-scale work is a relationship with an artist, not a transaction — which is why plenty of collectors return to Bali across multiple trips to finish one piece.

Match the Tier to Your Trip, Not Just Your Idea

The most common mistake is bringing a tier three concept to a tier one schedule. If you have a week in Bali, a mid-size custom piece will serve you far better than a rushed sleeve. Send us your reference images and your dates, and our artists at Canggu, Seminyak and Uluwatu will tell you honestly what fits — and what's worth saving for the next trip.
