Fine Line Tattoos in Bali

Single-weight linework, drawn thin and kept thin. The most requested style in all three studios and the one that asks most of the artist’s hand — there is no shading to hide behind, so the line either holds its weight from first stroke to last or it does not.

What fine line actually demands

Fine line is a single needle held at a consistent depth for the whole piece. Too shallow and the line drops out within a year; too deep and it spreads and blurs. There is no shading to cover an inconsistency, which is why it looks simple and is not.

Most of the fine line work we correct for other people fails for one of those two reasons. The design was fine. The depth wandered.

Placement decides how it ages

Skin that stretches and folds ages a thin line faster than anywhere else. Inner wrist, fingers, ribs and the inside of the elbow all move constantly. Forearm, outer bicep, shoulder blade and calf are the placements where fine line holds its shape longest.

We will tell you honestly when the placement you want will not hold the design you want at the size you want. Usually the fix is a centimetre or two more, not a different idea.

Size and detail have a floor

Every design has a minimum size below which its own detail closes up. A botanical with six overlapping stems needs room for the gaps between them to survive; shrink it and in five years it is a grey smudge with a nice outline.

When a reference is too detailed for the size requested, we will either simplify the design or size it up. We will not tattoo something that looks sharp for two years and then stops.

What it costs

A small fine line piece of 3–5cm runs 850K–2.5M IDR (≈ $52–$155). Medium work at 5–10cm is 2M–5M IDR (≈ $124–$310). Larger and multi-session pieces are quoted after a free consultation.

Priced per design, never per hour. Send your reference, the size in centimetres and the placement and we come back with a range the artist confirms.

Sun, salt and the first two weeks

Bali is the hardest environment a fine line tattoo can heal in. No ocean, no pool and no direct sun for around two weeks, then sunscreen for the rest of its life. This is the single biggest factor in whether your line still looks like a line in five years.

If you are here for a short trip and want to surf, book the tattoo for the end of it. We would rather move your appointment than watch it heal badly.

Who does this work

Fine line is the core of what all three studios do — Canggu, Uluwatu and Seminyak run the same artists’ standard and the same prices. Every consultation is free, and every tattoo includes a free touch-up.

If a particular artist’s book is why you are booking, say so in the enquiry and we will route you to them.

Questions people ask

How long does a fine line tattoo last?

A well-placed, properly sized fine line piece holds for many years. What kills it is sun, an undersized design or a placement that moves constantly. All three are avoidable and we will flag them before you book.

Does fine line hurt less?

Usually yes — a single needle over a small area is among the gentler work we do. Ribs, sternum and inner arm are the exceptions regardless of style.

Can you do fine line on darker skin?

Yes. Contrast and depth are adjusted rather than the design. Send a photo of the area in natural light and we will tell you what will read well.

Do you charge for touch-ups?

No. Every tattoo includes a free touch-up, and fine line is the work that most often makes use of it.
