What makes a tattoo traditional

Traditional tattooing follows a set of rules rather than a subject list: a bold, even outline, a limited palette, flat areas of solid colour or black, and shapes simple enough to stay legible when the skin ages. Everything is subordinate to readability.

Those rules exist because the style was built for longevity before laser removal or touch-up culture existed. A traditional tattoo is designed on the assumption that it will be the same tattoo in forty years, which is exactly why the vocabulary is so tight.

The classic vocabulary

Daggers, hearts, swallows, roses, anchors, snakes, panthers, hands and eyes. The motifs carry meaning by convention — a swallow for return, a dagger through a heart for loss, an anchor for steadiness — and part of the appeal is joining a language that already exists.

We draw these as designs rather than copies. The vocabulary is shared; the composition, the size and the way it sits on your body are yours.

Traditional in black and grey

Not all traditional work is colour. Black-and-grey traditional keeps the bold outline and flat shading but drops the palette, which suits clients who want the structure of the style without the saturation. It also holds up particularly well in strong sun.

The dagger-and-heart piece in the gallery is a good example: classic motif, classic linework, executed entirely in black with dot shading for depth.

What it costs

A classic traditional piece of 8–12cm runs 1.5M–4M IDR (≈ $93–$250) depending on complexity and whether it is colour or black and grey. Smaller flash-sized work starts at 850K IDR (≈ $52). Larger panels and sleeves are quoted after a consultation.

Colour costs more than black and grey at the same size, because packing flat colour evenly takes longer and needs a second pass more often. We will tell you which one your design actually wants.

How it ages — the whole point

This is the style with the best ageing behaviour, by design. Bold outlines hold their edge, flat colour stays flat, and simple shapes survive the skin's slow spread. A well-made traditional tattoo at ten years looks like the same tattoo, slightly softer.

The failure mode is a traditional design made too small or too detailed — at which point it is not really traditional any more, and it will close up like any other over-packed piece. We will push back on that.
