Tattoo & piercing in Canggu

Our first room, opened in 2017, and the one everything else grew out of. Two floors on Jalan Sempol: tattooing and piercing downstairs, a quieter one above it for the artists.

A tattoo studio in Canggu, run the Amor Fati way

Amor Fati Canggu is our tattoo and piercing studio on Jalan Sempol, in Pererenan. It is the first of the three, open since 2017, and the only one over two floors. The ground floor is where you will be tattooed or pierced; the floor above is the artists' room, quieter, where the drawing gets done.

Fine line is what Canggu is asked for most, but every style we offer is drawn here, and the piercing chair runs all day alongside. Walk in and we will tattoo you if a chair is free. Anything custom has to be drawn first, so message us ahead and we will have it ready.

Tattoo and piercing in Canggu, under one roof

Amor Fati Canggu does both, in the same room, on the same day. Tattooing runs on the ground floor of Jalan Sempol and the piercing chair sits alongside it, so a couple who want one each don't need two appointments in two places. Most people book the tattoo and add the piercing once they're in.

That's worth saying plainly because plenty of studios do one properly and the other as a sideline. Ours are two separate jobs done by separate people: Marc and the resident artists tattoo, Agus pierces. Single-use needles for both, never a gun, and implant-grade titanium in every fresh piercing.

Fine line tattoos in Canggu

Fine line is what Canggu is asked for most. It's single-weight linework, drawn thin and kept thin, and it's the style with nowhere to hide: there's no shading to cover a wobble, so the line either holds from the first stroke to the last or it doesn't. We have 69 fine line pieces photographed in the portfolio.

It suits script, small florals, fine ornamental work and the kind of piece you want to read as jewellery rather than as a statement. It ages differently to bold work, which is the part worth knowing before you book: thin lines soften over years, faster on hands, fingers and feet, and faster again in Bali sun. We'll tell you where a design will hold and where it won't.

Realism, micro-realism and small work

Realism and micro-realism both happen here, and they're the pieces that need the most planning. A portrait or an animal in micro-realism is a long sitting and a drawing that gets revised before anyone picks up a machine, so these are the ones to message us about early rather than walking in for.

Small and minimalist work is the other end of it, and it's the most common first tattoo we do. A few centimetres, one sitting, often under an hour. There's no minimum piece we won't take on, but we will tell you if something is too small to hold its detail, because a design that turns into a smudge in three years helps nobody.

What a tattoo costs at the Canggu studio

We price per design, not per hour. You get one number, agreed before anyone starts, and it doesn't move because the piece took longer than expected. That's deliberate: charging by the hour rewards the slow artist and punishes you for asking questions.

The number depends on size, placement and how much detail the drawing carries, which is why we don't quote before we've seen what you want and where it's going. Send a reference, a rough size in centimetres and the placement on WhatsApp and you'll get the price back the same day. All three studios charge the same for the same piece.

Finding the Canggu studio, and booking it

We're on Jalan Sempol in Pererenan, five minutes from Pererenan Beach and about ten from Batu Bolong. Come by scooter and there's parking at the door; a taxi or Gojek will drop you straight outside. Open 9am to 9pm, every day.

Walk in and if a chair is free you'll be tattooed. Anything custom has to be drawn first, so message ahead and we'll have a design waiting rather than asking you to sit while it's sketched. A small piece often fits inside a week; give a large custom project about two weeks so the drawing gets the time it needs.

Common questions about Canggu

Do you take walk-ins in Canggu?

Yes, when a chair is free. Small pieces and piercings usually fit the same day. Custom work has to be drawn first, so message us ahead and we will have a design waiting.

How far ahead should I book at Canggu?

A small piece often fits inside a week. For a large custom project, give us about two weeks so the drawing gets the time it needs.

What is on the second floor?

The artists' room. It is where designs get drawn and where longer sittings go when the ground floor is busy. Same chairs, same standard, just quieter.
