Getting an ear piercing in Bali is not the same as getting one back home. Heat, humidity, saltwater and daily sweat all change how a fresh piercing behaves. Before you walk into any studio in Canggu, it helps to know exactly what you are signing up for — because the placement you choose decides the next six to twelve months of your life.

Daith: The Hardest Placement to Get Right

Daith. The small fold of inner cartilage just above your ear canal. It is one of the most technically demanding piercings to place correctly, and it rewards precision — a badly angled daith never sits flush. Expect 6 to 9 months of healing. Sleep on the opposite side. Avoid headphones that press directly into the ear for the first eight weeks.

Helix: Beautiful, Popular, and Slow to Heal

Helix. The outer rim of cartilage, and the most requested piercing we do. Healing runs 6 to 12 months because cartilage has almost no blood supply. The single biggest cause of an angry helix is not bacteria — it is trauma. Hair brushes, phone screens, bike helmets, and pulling shirts over your head. Be deliberate for the first three months and it settles beautifully.

Septum: Faster Than You'd Think

Septum. Pierced through the thin sweet spot of soft tissue, not the cartilage wall, which is why it heals faster than people expect — typically 2 to 3 months. It is also the most reversible: a horseshoe flipped up disappears entirely. That combination makes it the piercing of choice for travellers who need to look corporate on Monday.

Aftercare in the Tropics: Saline, Nothing Else

Aftercare in a tropical climate is simple but non-negotiable. Sterile saline twice daily, nothing else. No alcohol, no tea tree oil, no twisting the jewellery. Keep it out of the ocean, pools and rice paddies until fully healed, and use implant-grade titanium — not the cheap surgical steel handed out on the beach. At Amor Fati Tattoo Studio in Canggu, every piercing is done with single-use sterile equipment and a placement mapped to your anatomy, not a template. Book a consultation and we will tell you honestly which piercing suits your ear.
